Cold-Weather Motorcycle Riding Tips
Some folks may opt to ride their motorcycles only in good weather, and that’s perfectly fine. If you use your motorcycle as your primary vehicle, or you prefer riding when the air is brisk and has a bite to it, though, then you’re going to need to know how to ride your motorcycle in cold weather. Braving the cold requires you to follow a few tips to stay safe, and we’ve outlined these below for your convenience.
Layer Up
Your standard riding pants and jacket probably won’t cut it for winter rides. Instead, you’re going to have to build up some layers to keep yourself comfortable. Look for thermal underwear and thin sweaters that you can wear underneath your typical riding gear. Don’t forget to add a knit cap under your helmet, insulated riding gloves, and thick socks. An insulated riding suit can also help you stay warmer on the road.
Keep Your Motorcycle Maintained
A poorly-cared-for motorcycle is liable to leave you stranded alongside a snowy highway, trying to find help. Make sure that your bike is ready to go before each of your winter rides by checking the tire pressure (the cold can cause your tires to lose pressure, so they may need airing up more frequently in winter), changing your oil, and adding antifreeze to your fluids. Always fill up your gas tank before you leave, too!
